Bomb threat to Varanasi court causes panic

A bomb threat received via email targeting the district court in Varanasi, India, led to a security scare and significant law enforcement mobilization.

On Friday, a bomb threat caused chaos at the Varanasi district court in Uttar Pradesh, following an email warning sent directly to the district judge. The threat prompted immediate actions from judicial and administrative officials, with the district judge convening a meeting with the president of the Central Bar Association and other officers to discuss the gravity of the situation. Promptly, police were notified, and a large security presence was dispatched to the courthouse, including personnel from several police stations, senior officials, bomb disposal units, and dog squads.

According to DCP Pramod Kumar of the Varuna Zone, the email specified the presence of bombs at approximately 18 to 20 locations, including the court complex. In response to the serious nature of the threat, extensive searches were conducted at the courthouse, including the main building, records room, and surrounding areas. The bomb disposal squad worked diligently, supported by dog squads to investigate any suspicious objects encountered during the searches, while lawyers and court officials were on alert, enhancing the overall security in the area.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by security agencies in managing threats against public institutions, especially in a country where such threats can often be more than just hoaxes. The quick response from court officials and law enforcement underscores the importance of preparedness in the face of potential threats, aiming to ensure the safety of all individuals present in the courthouse.
