‘After 18 Years of Stagnation' Wirye-Sinsa Line to Be Built with Seoul City's Finances
Seoul City will directly pursue the long-delayed Wirye-Sinsa light rail project with its own finances after receiving final approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The Wirye-Sinsa light rail project, which has been stagnant for nearly 18 years, is set to move forward as Seoul City will now fund the project after receiving final approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Originally proposed in 2008, the project had faced numerous delays attributed to the rising cost of materials and fluctuations in interest rates. With the recent legal groundwork laid for the transition from a private investment project to a publicly financed initiative, Seoul City is optimistic about securing a stable foundation for advancement.
The light rail will connect Wirye New Town to Sinsa Station on Seoul's Line 3, covering a distance of 14.8 kilometers. This project has been deemed crucial for enhancing public transport in the southeastern part of the city, addressing long-standing transportation network issues. By reclassifying the project as a public financing endeavor, the city aims to alleviate past setbacks and ensure that it meets the transportation needs of residents in the area.
Following the ministry's approval, the city will proceed with subsequent steps, including a rapid preliminary feasibility study by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, leading to the development of basic plans and design phases. This proactive approach illustrates Seoul's commitment to improving its transportation network and its responsiveness to the demands of its residents, particularly in areas that have long awaited better connectivity.
