Gwangju's proposed urban railway, the Gwangcheon-Sangmu Line, has received approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport after passing the National Transport Commission's review.
The Gwangcheon-Sangmu Line is an urban railway intended to connect the Gwangju Comprehensive Bus Terminal with the Sangmu Station on Gwangju subway line 1, comprising a length of 7.78 kilometers. Following a submission to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MoLIT) last February, the project passed the review by the National Transport Commission, now awaiting final approval and announcement by MoLIT. Urban rail project initiatives in South Korea must follow a prescribed process that includes establishing a plan every decade, undergoing a rigorous review process, and obtaining ministerial approval.
Following the approval from the National Transport Commission, the next steps include preliminary feasibility studies and the establishment of detailed plans before the construction can commence. The total budget for the Gwangcheon-Sangmu Line is projected at 692.5 billion won, with expectations that completion will alleviate chronic traffic congestion at key intersections, particularly around the Gwangcheon intersection, known for its proximity to major retail centers and the Gwangju Kia Champions Field. The project is notably significant as it aligns with broader urban transit initiatives in Gwangju aiming for improved transportation infrastructure.
Gwangju's Mayor, Kang Ki-jeong, emphasized the importance of expediting the administrative procedures required for the project, aiming for a smooth transition from the approval stage to actual construction. The Gwangcheon-Sangmu Line is anticipated to greatly enhance access not only to the bus terminal but also to a new shopping mall set to open in 2028, alongside existing attractions. This project exemplifies Gwangju's commitment to modernizing its urban transportation options and addressing long-standing transit issues.
