Piauí: Income rises and 17,000 escape poverty in family farming

Data shows that income has improved for families involved in family farming in Piauí, with 17,638 families rising above the poverty line by 2025.

On Thursday, data was presented at the Palácio de Karnak showcasing improvements in income for families reliant on family farming in the state of Piauí. The findings revealed a significant increase in the number of families registered in the Federal Government's Cadastro Único that achieved a per capita income surpassing half of the minimum wage, moving them above the poverty line. This progress highlights the effectiveness of governmental policies in poverty alleviation in the region.

According to research from the Secretary of Family Agriculture (SAF), in 2023, there were 7,634 families classified as living below the poverty line in Piauí. By 2025, thanks to enhancements in government programs, the number of families benefiting from these efforts surged to 17,638, marking a remarkable growth of 131%. This increase underscores the impact of targeted public policies aimed at uplifting rural communities and improving their economic conditions.

Rejane Tavares, the Secretary of Family Agriculture in Piauí, emphasized that this advancement stems from a comprehensive set of structural actions designed to incentivize agriculture. These initiatives have provided essential support and resources to farmers, fostering an environment in which they can thrive. Overall, the substantial rise in income levels and the reduction in poverty among family farming households signify important strides toward economic stability in the state.
