Training prepares police for approaching people with autism in Santarém

Military police in Santarém received training on how to effectively and compassionately engage with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Military police in Santarém, located in the western part of Pará, Brazil, participated in a specialized training aimed at enhancing their approach to situations involving individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This initiative was organized by the Regional Police Command 1 (CPR-1) and included input from civil society representatives. The training focused on equipping officers, particularly those working in school environments, to conduct safer and more humane interactions with these individuals.

Captain Graciete Queiroz, who addressed the participants, emphasized the significance of this training as a reinforcement of the preventative efforts already in place within the police force. She conveyed that the nature of the subject demands a high level of sensitivity and preparedness among officers, highlighting the importance of the police's role in preventive measures through social projects and programs such as 'Escola Segura' (Safe School). By equipping officers with the necessary skills and knowledge, the initiative aims to foster a safer environment for both the police and the community they serve.

Sgt. Glauber Mota, the coordinator of School Community Policing, underlined that the training included practical scenarios that officers may encounter during their daily duties. He noted the importance of extending this approach beyond the municipality's limits, ensuring that the philosophy of humane treatment and sensitivity towards individuals with ASD is adopted throughout the entire region. This reflects a broader societal recognition of the need to inclusively integrate and adequately respond to diverse community needs by law enforcement personnel.
