Latvian State Roads: Due to Strong Blizzard, Extra Travel Time Should Be Planned on Friday

Latvian authorities warn that heavy snowfall and blizzard conditions may cause travel delays on Friday, requiring drivers to allow extra time on the roads.

Latvian State Roads (LVC) has issued a warning regarding severe winter weather conditions that are likely to affect travel on Friday. The organization noted that while road cleaning and salting operations are conducted during snowfalls, extremely strong snowstorms can lead to snow accumulation and drifts forming more quickly than they can be addressed. As such, the effectiveness of maintenance operations is limited in these conditions.

The LVC prioritizes snow removal operations by focusing initially on major roads and those with higher traffic volumes. Complete clearing of the roads from snow is only achieved once the snowfall has ceased. For busy roads classified as A class, the allocated time for snow clearing can take up to three hours; however, for roads with lower traffic volumes, this can extend to 24 hours or longer. Notably, there is no specific time frame for clearing local roads with very low traffic (classified as D maintenance class).

In emergency circumstances defined by ongoing snowfall for more than four hours accompanied by an average snow layer exceeding 12 centimeters and a wind speed greater than 20 meters per second, the LVC is permitted to deviate from standard maintenance protocols. This warning urges people to take necessary precautions when traveling, emphasizing the potential for hazardous driving conditions due to ongoing blizzard conditions in Latvia.
