After river overflow and floods neighborhoods, water starts to recede in Atibaia

Heavy rains caused the Atibaia River to overflow, flooding neighborhoods and displacing families, but water levels have begun to drop.

In Atibaia, Brazil, neighborhoods were recently submerged due to the overflow of the Atibaia River, which rose 70 centimeters above normal levels after significant rainfall. This flooding resulted in at least 15 families being displaced, with images from early Thursday showing some streets in the Parque das Nações neighborhood experiencing a decrease in water levels by approximately 10 centimeters. Despite this minor improvement, many residents remain unable to return to their homes due to ongoing flooding issues.

The flooding began on Wednesday, as the continuous rains accumulated, leading to severe impacts in various parts of Atibaia, specifically in neighborhoods such as Parque das Nações, Jardim Kanimar, Caetetuba, and Terceiro Centenário. Rescue efforts were mobilized, with Civil Defense teams employing boats to assist trapped residents. Reports indicate that over a span of 48 hours, rainfall reached 114 millimeters, contributing significantly to the flood situation in the area.

As the water begins to recede, local authorities are faced with challenges to address the aftermath of the flood, ensuring displaced families are provided with necessary support and that recovery efforts can proceed smoothly. The situation underscores the vulnerabilities communities face regarding extreme weather events and the importance of preparedness and infrastructure to mitigate such risks in the future.
