Water recedes and cleaning of flooded streets begins in Guaratinguetá; six people remain displaced
Heavy rainfall in Guaratinguetá caused flooding, but as waters recede, municipal teams begin street cleaning, although six individuals are still displaced.
Following a significant rainstorm that struck Guaratinguetá between Thursday night and early Friday morning, the waters have started to recede from the inundated areas. Municipal teams, alongside civil defense forces, have begun the process of cleaning the flooded streets as of Saturday morning. Despite the ongoing cleanup efforts, the local government reported that six individuals remain displaced due to the flooding incident.
The storm resulted in an impressive total of 150 millimeters of rainfall within just two days, approaching the monthly average of 163 millimeters. The high volume of rain led to the overflow of the Piagui River, which inundated several homes in the Pilões neighborhood, exacerbating the local flooding situation. The restoration of electrical services in the Parque das Árvores area, which previously experienced outages, is a positive development, but challenges in managing the aftermath of the storm continue.
Authorities from the National Center for Monitoring and Disaster Alerts (Cemaden) provided insights into the rainfall levels, emphasizing the exceptional weather conditions that led to this flooding crisis. As the local government mobilizes to restore normalcy, the urgency of their efforts underscores the importance of disaster preparedness and response mechanisms in minimizing the impact of such severe weather events in the future.
