Municipality of Athens: Four municipal transportation lines with 17 buses

The Municipality of Athens is launching four new municipal transport lines to improve citizen mobility in the city.

The Municipality of Athens is set to implement four new municipal transportation lines equipped with 17 buses, aimed at enhancing accessibility and mobility in the city. This initiative follows a transport study that identified significant accessibility deficiencies, a high reliance on polluting private vehicles, and rising transportation costs in specific neighborhoods. The study received approval from the Athens Urban Transport Organization (OASA) and has been proposed for funding to the government, included in the Climate Social Fund.

The new transportation network, dubbed "Athens Move," will involve an investment of 11.2 million euros and will feature 4 lines spanning a total of 40 kilometers with 185 stops. These lines will connect key areas, including Neos Kosmos, Petralona, Kerameikos, Kato Patissia, Sepolia, and Kypseli, effectively catering to various neighborhoods. The implementation aims to complement existing services provided by OASA and the metro system, thereby alleviating congestion and enhancing connectivity across the city.

This initiative represents a critical step towards modernizing public transportation in Athens and addressing environmental concerns linked to transportation emissions. By reducing dependency on private vehicles and providing comprehensive access to underserved areas, the new bus lines are expected to improve overall public transport efficiency and encourage more sustainable travel habits among citizens, aligning with broader climate goals.
