23rd Anniversary of the Daegu Subway Disaster: “We Can't Even Have a Proper Commemoration Name”
On the 23rd anniversary of the Daegu subway disaster, victim organizations and civil society urged the Daegu city government and council for a proper commemoration of the victims.
As the 23rd anniversary of the Daegu subway disaster approaches, various victim organizations and civil groups have held a press conference demanding that the Daegu City government properly commemorate the tragic event, which was one of the most severe social disasters in Korea. The Daegu Subway Disaster Victims' Support Committee, among 18 involved organizations, criticized the city's lack of memorial parks or monuments dedicated to the disaster, emphasizing that such measures have yet to be implemented despite the tragedy's significance. They condemned the recent decision by the Daegu City Council to postpone the discussion of a bill aimed at renaming the Daegu Citizen Safety Theme Park to include a memorial, highlighting ongoing neglect of the victims' memory.
The bill to incorporate the name "2·18 Memorial Park" into the existing park was brought forward by Demcoratic Party member Lee Jeong-mi, but was met with resistance from the ruling party, which cited a lack of agreement with local businesses as a reason to delay the decision. This move echoes previous attempts to amend legislation that have also fallen short. The support groups expressed shame over the city’s inability to honor memorial services for the victims, emphasizing the need for a dedicated space to commemorate those who lost their lives in the disaster, as well as institutional improvements to ensure public safety.
In response, the chair of the Daegu Subway Disaster Victims' Support Committee, Yoon Seok-ki, called on the city to actively pursue administrative measures to resolve the issue, insisting on the importance of recognizing those who have suffered. Starting from the 11th to the 18th, civil society organizations are running "Safety Week" in Daegu to raise awareness, which includes establishing a memorial wall for citizens to pay their respects at the central subway station. On the anniversary date, a memorial ceremony is planned to be held at 9:50 AM at the Daegu Citizen Safety Theme Park, demonstrating the ongoing efforts to keep the memory of the victims alive and to advocate for safety reforms in the community.
