Man suspected of two homicides arrested with explosives in Manaus

A man suspected of two homicides in Manaus was arrested along with an explosive device.

On Tuesday, October 10, 2023, the Civil Police of Amazonas (PC-AM) arrested 49-year-old Adiel da Silva e Silva, a suspect in connection with two homicides in the West Zone of Manaus. During the arrest, authorities discovered an explosive device in his possession. The suspect is being investigated for the murders of Silas Barbosa da Silva, aged 42, and Márcio Nonato Alves, aged 32, which occurred on July 14 and 31, 2023, in the neighborhoods of Tarumã and Compensa, respectively.

The investigation by the Specialized Homicide and Kidnapping Division (DEHS) indicates that Márcio Nonato was shot at least 15 times while sitting in a car with his four-year-old son. This details a severe escalation of violence, particularly concerning the presence of a minor during the incident, highlighting a grim reality in certain urban areas of Brazil. The police have indicated that the nature of the crimes underscores the growing concern of homicide rates and gang-related violence in the region.

Subsequent to the arrest, the Explosive Management Group (Marte) of the Amazonas Military Police (PMAM) was called in to safely handle the explosive device found with the suspect. This intervention underlines the continued efforts by law enforcement to address both violent crime and public safety while also managing the dangers posed by explosive materials, which often have ties to organized crime.
