Man arrested in Manaus suspected of double homicide motivated by a television debt
A man has been arrested in Manaus for his suspected involvement in a double homicide linked to a debt over a television.
Cleison Cunha da Silva, a 33-year-old man, was arrested in Manaus, Brazil, on Thursday, October 12, due to his alleged role in a double homicide that occurred in 2020 in the ColΓ΄nia Terra Nova neighborhood. The police investigation revealed that the crime was motivated by a debt related to a television, which led to a series of events culminating in the tragic deaths of two men, Elinaldo Pedreiro Mateus and Omilton Pereira de Castro JΓΊnior. Cleison had been on the run for over five years before his arrest.
According to the Specialized Police Station for Homicides and Kidnappings (DEHS), the motive behind the murders began when Cleison sought to collect a debt from Omilton. When Omilton was not at home, Cleison took a television and left a message for Omilton to retrieve it, effectively baiting him. This led Omilton to gather friends and confront Cleison, resulting in an ambush that turned deadly for both victim and perpetrator.
The case highlights the dangerous and often fatal consequences of gang-related debt disputes in Brazilian cities, where individuals sometimes resort to violence over relatively trivial transactions. The complexity of the ongoing investigation, led by Delegate Ricardo Cunha, points to deeper societal issues surrounding crime and justice in urban Brazil, where economic pressures can escalate conflicts dangerously, leading to serious criminal behavior.
