Double Hoy No Circula Thursday? Air quality is poor in 4 municipalities; live report continues
Air quality in Mexico City remains poor, particularly in four municipalities, despite avoiding a Doble Hoy No Circula restriction on February 11.
On February 11, the government of Mexico City reported that air quality in certain areas of the city remains poor this Wednesday morning. Specifically, the municipalities of Benito JuΓ‘rez, Iztapalapa, TlΓ‘huac, and Xochimilco showed significant concentrations of pollutants, particularly PM 2.5 and PM 10 particles. This follows a week where, while there was potential for the Doble Hoy No Circula program to be enforced, conditions allowed for the status quo to continue despite the alarming air quality levels.
The Megalopolis Environmental Commission (CAMe) has raised concerns about ongoing weather conditions in central Mexico that allow for high concentrations of ozone, which can trigger phase 1 of the environmental contingency plan. As of now, the agency reports that conditions are expected to remain as they are at least until Sunday, February 15. There is an increasing risk that ozone levels could exceed 150 points, leading to further environmental health advisories.
With the anticipated change in weather patterns and the potential for escalated pollution levels, residents are being urged to stay informed, particularly regarding outdoor activities. The situation highlights broader environmental issues concerning air quality in urban settings, calling for necessary actions from both the government and citizens to mitigate health risks associated with pollution.
