Anambra arrests six for illegal revenue collection
Six individuals have been arrested in Anambra State, Nigeria, for illegally collecting revenue from public transport operators.
The Anambra State Internal Revenue Service has taken action against illegal revenue collection by arresting six individuals in Oye Utuh, located within the Nnewi South Local Government Area. These individuals, identified as Christopher Mmadu, Paul Kenechukwu, Emeka Okoli, Livinus Ezulike, Nzube Nnoluka, and Anayo Agu, were allegedly involved in collecting unauthorized fees from commercial bus drivers, tricycle riders, and motorcycle riders as they attempted to enforce illegal levies.
According to Nathan Obikwelu, the Special Commander of the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service, these arrests were made in response to ongoing efforts to crack down on unauthorized revenue collection, which is prohibited under state law. The suspects were apprehended during active revenue collection and have since been taken to the Onitsha Revenue Court, where they have been remanded in custody at the Onitsha Correctional Centre.
This operation aligns with the directives issued by Governor Chukwuma Soludo to eradicate illegal revenue practices in the state, reflecting a broader commitment by the Anambra State government to uphold the law and protect the interests of legitimate revenue collectors and operators. The revenue service has stated that it will continue to pursue and penalize individuals engaged in these unlawful activities to ensure compliance and transparency in revenue collection in Anambra State.
