Attempts to recover nearly 12,000 euros from former Visaginas mayor D. Štraupaitė in the 'Čekiukai' case
The prosecution seeks to recover nearly 12,000 euros from former Visaginas mayor D. Štraupaitė due to questionable fuel compensation claims during her term from 2019 to 2023.
The Lithuanian prosecution has initiated actions to recover approximately 12,000 euros from D. Štraupaitė, the former mayor of Visaginas, in relation to the 'Čekiukai' case. According to the prosecutor's findings, during her tenure from 2019 to 2023, Štraupaitė received unjustified compensation amounting to 10,567 euros for fuel expenses. This compensation was questionable as it was claimed during the pandemic when movement restrictions were in place and remote work was standard, raising concerns about the legitimacy of her fuel usage claims.
Additionally, it emerged that Štraupaitė reported using two cars during her term, one petrol and one diesel, but the investigation uncovered that one of these vehicles had not been operational for about one and a half years due to expired insurance and technical inspection requirements. The prosecution noted that Štraupaitė failed to provide documentation to validate the use of the second vehicle during her term, leading to suspicions regarding her fuel purchases.
There are also findings indicating irregularities in her fuel purchasing practices, including simultaneous or consecutive purchases of diesel and petrol on the same days as council meetings, which further tightens the scrutiny on her financial activities during her time in office. The case underscores broader concerns regarding accountability and transparency among local government officials in Lithuania.
