Prosecutor requests the court to recover nearly 11 thousand euros from the mayor of Zarasai

The prosecutor's office is seeking to recover almost 11,000 euros from the mayor of Zarasai due to questionable expenses claimed for fuel.

The prosecutor's office has initiated a request to the court to retrieve 10,910 euros from N. Guobienė, the current mayor of Zarasai district and a former council member. This case arises from alleged misuse of municipal funds allocated for expenses relating to her role as a council member between 2019-2023, where she had claimed compensation amounting to 11,787 euros from the municipal budget. Investigations revealed discrepancies in the fuel expenses she submitted, which primarily involved diesel purchases despite her claims of using two petrol vehicles.

During her term, N. Guobienė reported fuel costs on 24 occasions through her bank card and submitted 60 receipts for fuel paid for with her family members' cards. Additionally, it was highlighted that large quantities of diesel were often purchased, raising suspicions about the legitimate use of funds. The prosecutor's findings suggest that the submitted receipts may not accurately reflect the actual expenses incurred for her municipal duties, which has led to further scrutiny of her financial dealings during her tenure.

This development not only casts a shadow over Guobienė's administration but also raises broader concerns about financial accountability in local government. The pursuit of this case reflects ongoing efforts by authorities to ensure transparency and integrity among elected officials, particularly in the wake of increased public scrutiny regarding the use of public funds and resources. Should the court find in favor of the prosecutor, it may set a precedent for similar cases in local governance across Lithuania.
