Justice suspends the competition of the City Hall of Campos for considering insufficient percentage of racial quotas
The Rio de Janeiro Justice has suspended a public competition in Campos dos Goytacazes due to inadequate racial quota representation in the job positions offered.
The Justice of Rio de Janeiro has ordered the suspension of a public competition organized by the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes. This decision came after the 3rd Civil Court found that the percentage of racial quotas set in the edict was insufficient. Specifically, only 10% of the positions were reserved for black, mixed-race, indigenous, and quilombolas candidates, which raised concerns about equality in access to the positions, especially given the significant quilombola population in the area.
The public competition aimed to fill approximately one thousand immediate vacancies, primarily for teaching positions in early childhood education and the early years of elementary school. The initiative intended to enhance the educational workforce in the municipality, which has its own set of unique educational challenges. However, the racial quotas outlined in the edict were deemed inadequate to ensure fair representation of marginalized communities.
The suspension comes in response to a civil public action filed by the Public Defender's Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro, which stressed that the lack of sufficient racial quotas would hinder equal access to these opportunities. This ruling underscores ongoing dialogues in Brazil regarding racial inclusion in public employment and highlights the importance of equitable representation in the educational sector, particularly in municipalities with considerable historical ties to quilombola communities.
