Council rejects appeal against archiving of CPI to investigate João Campos; opposition boycotts voting and calls for justice

The Recife City Council rejected an appeal from the opposition to investigate João Campos regarding irregularities in a public competition that allegedly benefited a judge's son.

The Recife City Council on Thursday rejected an appeal from the opposition aimed at reopening a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) to investigate the alteration of a public competition result that allegedly favored the son of a judge involved in a corruption investigation against the city hall. The motion to institute the CPI was initially presented by councilor Thiago Medina and was supported by 13 out of 37 council members, but was quickly dismissed by the council's president, Romerinho Jatobá.

Despite the support for the CPI, the council's ruling party, the PSB, managed to mobilize a majority vote against resuming the inquiry. The rejection of the appeal sparked a significant backlash from opposition members, who accused the ruling party of obstructing necessary investigations into suspected influence peddling and nepotism related to public competition results. The case raises serious questions about transparency and accountability within the local government.

In addition to rejecting the appeal, opposition members announced their intention to seek judicial intervention to revisit the council’s decision. The allegations against João Campos, which include being the target of an impeaching request, highlight the ongoing political tensions in Recife's municipal politics, suggesting that the issues surrounding governance and ethical conduct remain pressing concerns for local citizens.
