Justice suspends increase in commissioned positions in the Chamber of Campinas
A court in Campinas, Brazil, has temporarily suspended the increase in commissioned positions in city council offices following a request from the Public Ministry.
The Municipal Chamber of Campinas (SP) has faced a significant legal setback as a judge granted an injunction to suspend the increase in commissioned positions within the city council. This decision, made by Judge Mauro Iuji Fukumoto, stems from a request by the Public Ministry (MP), aimed at maintaining previous limits on the number of advisors each councilor can appoint. According to existing regulations established by the court in 2024, each cabinet may only have five commissioned advisors.
This recent ruling is provisional, allowing the Chamber the opportunity to present its arguments before the decision is finalized. While the Chamber may contest this ruling, adherence to the injunction is mandated immediately, leading to a swift communication sent out by the presidency of the Chamber to all councilors. In this notice, councilors with more than the allowable five commissioned assistants have been instructed to promptly terminate the excess positions, with a template for resignation included for convenience.
Further complicating the situation, the Chamber's leadership has signaled intentions to appeal the ruling, indicating that the issue is likely to remain contentious in the coming weeks. The implications of this suspension are significant for both the operations of the city council and the broader governance of Campinas, as it reflects ongoing tensions regarding the management of public resources and accountability within local government structures.
