The Minister revealed how much residents of Kapčiamiestis will be compensated for non-material losses

Lithuanian Minister Robertas Kaunas announced compensation plans for residents affected by the establishment of a military training ground in Kapčiamiestis.

During a press conference, Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Robertas Kaunas revealed details concerning compensation for residents of Kapčiamiestis impacted by the creation of a military training ground. The area designated for military use encompasses approximately 14,600 hectares, which include almost 2,000 private plots, primarily consisting of forest land. This significant development raises concerns among local residents regarding the loss of their properties and emotional distress associated with displacement.

The military's plans involve the acquisition of 13 homesteads, compelling their owners to vacate the premises as shooting ranges are set to be established on these plots. Additionally, 77 other homesteads fall within the military training territory, giving their owners the option to either remain or sell their properties. The implications of this development not only affect the livelihoods of those directly displaced but also raise broader questions about land use rights and community disruption.

Kaunas emphasized that the compensation for the affected owners aims to address both the material loss and the emotional experiences that accompany such drastic changes in their lives. This initiative reflects an increasing recognition of the human costs tied to military expansions and the importance of providing fair restitution to those facing displacement due to national security considerations.
