The government approved the establishment of the Kapčiamiesč military training ground and area

The Lithuanian government has approved plans to establish a military training ground in Kapčiamiesč to bolster national defense in response to the perceived threat from Russia.

In light of the increasing threat from Russia towards Europe, the Lithuanian government has taken decisive action to enhance its national defense capabilities by approving the establishment of a military training area in Kapčiamiesč. This training ground is deemed essential for addressing the needs of troop preparations and reinforcing the defensive readiness of the strategic Suwalki corridor, which is significant for NATO's eastern flank, according to Minister of National Defence R. Kaunas.

The legislative proposal for the training area has been revised based on feedback and suggestions from institutions and stakeholders. Following discussions with local residents, the government is presenting compromise solutions to accommodate various interests involved in the establishment of the training area. This balances the military needs with the concerns of those affected, ensuring community engagement in the decision-making process.

The area designated for the military training ground will include 13 private properties and 800 forest and agricultural plots, which will be appropriated for public use once the law is passed by the Seimas, Lithuania's parliament. Additionally, 77 residential properties will be affected within the military training territory, with owners having the option to retain their properties or sell them to the state within a specified time frame. This development reflects Lithuania's commitment to enhancing its defense readiness amidst regional security challenges, particularly from neighboring Russia.
