Latvian police have conducted over 9,200 checks on cargo transport in 2025, revealing that one truck exceeded its weight limit by almost 30 tons.

In 2025, the State Police's Transportation Monitoring Department of Latvia has intensified efforts to ensure road safety through regular inspections of cargo transport, conducting more than 9,200 checks. These checks not only focus on the actual weight of vehicles but also include inspections of hazardous cargo and the securing of loads. Among these inspections, a notable case was discovered where a truck was found to be carrying almost 30 tons over its legal weight limit.

The extensive inspections in 2025 revealed that 46% of the checks were conducted on foreign carriers while 54% targeted Latvian transportation companies. In total, the police initiated administrative proceedings for 3,038 violations related to various infractions found during inspections. This indicates a significant enforcement effort aimed at ensuring compliance with vehicle weight regulations, which are critical for maintaining safety on the roads.

Additionally, passenger transportation checks were also carried out, with 161 individual inspections where 25% involved foreign carriers and 75% involved local operators. This comprehensive monitoring approach by the State Police underscores the ongoing commitment to improving traffic safety and compliance in Latvia, preventing potential accidents stemming from overloaded commercial vehicles and ensuring the safety of all road users.
