Strengthening truck inspections: 18 scales planned for control
Lithuania plans to install 18 weighing stations to enhance the inspection of heavy transport vehicles and prevent overloads.
Lithuania is taking significant steps to strengthen the monitoring of heavy transport vehicles by installing 18 weighing stations over the next three years. According to the Minister's statements to LRT radio, the initiative includes the installation of scales in key locations to enable continuous checks on heavy transport vehicles around the clock. The aim is to deter carriers from overloading trucks, which can lead to road damage and safety issues.
The plan involves utilizing advanced technologies such as sensors that can automatically generate reports, much like instant speed cameras. The State Road Transport Inspectorate (LTSA) is expected to enhance its capacity to conduct physical inspections on highways, allowing for the identification of overloading instances more effectively. With a clear goal set by 2025, the LTSA aims to check 12,000 heavy vehicles with a projected detection of over 200 instances of overloading based on past inspections.
Despite these efforts, the challenges remain significant as over 18,000 trucks travel on Lithuanian highways daily. This move not only highlights the government's commitment to road safety and infrastructure maintenance but also reflects the ongoing issues related to load regulation in freight transport, demonstrating the vital need for robust oversight mechanisms in the sector.
