Ähtäri Zoo Reopens After Bankruptcy – Glasses Bear Tahvo Finally Gets Companions
Ähtäri Zoo will reopen next week after going bankrupt last autumn, with new management in place to ensure its future.
Ähtäri Zoo, which was forced to close last autumn due to bankruptcy, is set to reopen next week. The zoo is now managed by a newly registered company, Mesi Zoo, and operates in partnership with the non-profit organization 'Vieraile ja välität', which has been caring for the zoo's animals over the past months. The new structure allows Mesi Zoo to focus on generating revenue while the association handles the day-to-day animal care, ensuring that the facilities can meet their operational needs.
Under the leadership of Risto Sivonen, who will take over as chairman of Mesi Zoo, the company is currently conducting a share issue until the end of February, aiming to raise funds for the zoo's operations. At present, about 70% of their fundraising goal has been achieved, which they state is necessary to maintain operations through the summer. Their ultimate goal is to raise half a million euros, which highlights the financial challenges they face in stabilizing the zoo's future.
The new investment structure includes significant A shares with a minimum investment of 50,000 euros and B shares (support shares) at a minimum of 500 euros, which have drawn considerable interest from the local Ähtäri community. This local engagement in ownership indicates a strong community connection to the zoo and highlights the importance of public support in its comeback, especially for beloved animals like Tahvo, the glasses bear, who is expected to receive companions once the zoo is fully operational again.
