Ähtäri Zoo is saved – new residents are to be acquired for the panda house

Ähtäri Zoo has been rescued by new investors who aim to improve the facility and acquire new pandas.

The Ähtäri Zoo has regained stability after recent financial troubles, thanks to new co-investors Kristiina and Tapio Peltomäki, who have injected €150,000 into the institution. Despite their lack of experience in animal care and zoo management, the Peltomäkis are committed to giving the zoo another chance after it faced bankruptcy. Their involvement began with a phone call from former board chairman Risto Sivonen, who sought assistance for the zoo's survival amid mounting financial pressures.

The couple aims to strategize future developments for the zoo, which had been temporarily supported by a local association, Visit and Care. This organization had rallied donations to look after the animals following the zoo's financial collapse. However, with funds running low as the new year approached, the urgency for long-term solutions became critical, prompting the Peltomäkis to step in and provide the necessary financial support to ensure the zoo's operational continuity.

With plans to acquire new residents for the panda house, the Peltomäkis' involvement brings a new wave of hope for the zoo. Their commitment indicates a potential revitalization of the venue, which not only benefits the remaining animals but also serves to attract visitors back to the site. Moving forward, the new leadership under Kristiina Peltomäki will focus on initiatives that could enhance both the animal habitat and the overall visitor experience at the zoo.
