The bears at Ähtäri Zoo have awakened from their winter sleep

The bears at Ähtäri Zoo have awakened from hibernation and are now resuming activity in their snowy outdoor enclosure.

The bears at Ähtäri Zoo in Finland have recently emerged from hibernation, a seasonal event noted by the 'Vieraile ja välität' association, which manages the animal care at the zoo. Currently, there are four male brown bears in the facility, including Jaki, born in 2011, and the three brothers Kasper, Jesper, and Joonatan, born in 2016. Their mother, Mimmi, who was born in 1991, passed away last August, leaving the zoo staff to care for the remaining bears. Despite an unusually warm winter, zookeepers report that the bears have slept well throughout the season. Upon waking, the animals have engaged in playful activities, wrestling, and running around in their snowy outdoor enclosures. The staff has cautiously resumed feeding the bears, offering them apples and carrots as they transition out of hibernation. The feeding doors to their enclosures have been left open, allowing the bears the freedom to choose whether to stay in their indoor nests or venture outside. Traditionally, bears at Ähtäri Zoo awaken around late February to early March, and this year has followed the typical pattern, with the bears reportedly enjoying a good rest over winter.
