[Breaking] Fearless teenager Yoo Seung-eun wins bronze medal on Olympic stage

18-year-old Yoo Seung-eun secured a bronze medal in her debut at the Olympics in Snowboard Big Air.

Yoo Seung-eun, a fearless 18-year-old snowboarder from South Korea, claimed the bronze medal in the Snowboard Big Air event during her first appearance at the Winter Olympics. Competing at the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics in Livigno, Italy, Yoo achieved a total score of 171.00 points, marking Korea's second medal in this competition and the third ever in the skiing and snowboarding category. Previously, South Korean athlete Kim Sang-kyum won a silver medal in the men's parallel giant slalom, providing a boost to the country's medal tally.

In the final event, Yoo performed three jumps, scoring 87.75 points and 83.25 points in her first and second attempts, respectively. However, a landing mistake during her final jump resulted in a score of 20.75, leading to her overall placement. Big Air athletes are evaluated based on the highest two scores from three jumps, which integrates performance in terms of height, technique, and landing precision. The event has been part of the Olympics since the 2018 PyeongChang games, and Yoo's bronze marks a significant milestone as she becomes the first South Korean to earn a medal in freestyle snowboarding.

Yoo qualified for the finals by securing the fourth position overall in the preliminary rounds, scoring a total of 166.50 points. Although she was lifting the competition with her leading scores in the first and second rounds, a mistake in her last jump saw her finish in third place. The Snowboard Big Air discipline features athletes soaring from large ramps over 30 meters high, showcasing their skills in jumps and rotations, crucially judged on their landing and distance, amplifying the excitement of this thrilling Olympic sport.
