Yoo Seung-eun's miraculous achievement with two 1440-degree spins in Livigno
At the Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina 2026, 18-year-old Yoo Seung-eun won a bronze medal in women's snowboard big air, marking a significant milestone for South Korea.
During the Winter Olympics held in Livigno, Italy, Yoo Seung-eun, an 18-year-old athlete from South Korea, secured a bronze medal in women's snowboard big air on February 10. This achievement makes her the first female snowboarder from South Korea to win an Olympic medal in this sport. Competing against seasoned athletes like Kokomo Murase from Japan and Jozi Sadowski-Synnott from New Zealand, Yoo's score of 171.00 points not only marked her debut Olympic success but also counted as the first medal for South Korea in freestyle skiing and snowboarding.
Yoo began her performance with a 'backside triple cork 1440' during her first attempt, achieving a score of 87.75, placing her second at that point in the competition. Her enthusiasm was evident as she celebrated her score before continuing to the second round, where she executed a 'frontside triple cork 1440' to earn 83.25 points. Despite a fall in her third attempt resulting in a score of 20.75, her previous scores secured her place on the podium. Yoo had ranked fourth in the qualifying rounds with a total score of 166.50 from her three attempts.
The significance of Yoo's bronze extends beyond her individual accomplishment, as it represents the third medal for South Korea in both skiing and snowboarding, previously won by male athletes Lee Sang-ho and Kim Sang-gyeom in the PyeongChang 2018 games. Yoo Seung-eun's performance not only highlights her personal talent but also marks a notable advancement for South Korean women in winter sports, paving the way for future generations of athletes.
