The icebreaker 'Varma' rescues two people blown out to sea on a drifting ice floe
An icebreaker named 'Varma' successfully rescued two individuals who had been blown onto a drifting piece of ice near Plieņciems, Latvia.
On the evening of February 21, a distress call was received at the Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) regarding two individuals blown onto a drifting ice floe in the sea near Plieņciems. Due to a crack in the ice, the situation was assessed as dangerous, prompting an immediate decision to initiate a rescue operation. The icebreaker 'Varma', belonging to a subsidiary of the Riga Freeport Authority, was dispatched to the scene as it was the closest vessel, approximately 35 km from the incident site. The search efforts were complicated by darkness and significant ice formations that hindered navigation in the icy waters. After five hours of intensive searching, around 1:00 AM, the crew of 'Varma' successfully located and rescued the two individuals, bringing them aboard. At around 3:00 AM, the rescued individuals were transferred to the ship 'Laura,' which took them to the mainland at Riga port and handed them over to medical personnel. This incident serves as a serious reminder to the public about the dangers of being reckless on ice.
