In Lithuania – flood of ill patients: at least 40 flu-stricken patients are admitted to the hospital daily

Lithuania is experiencing a significant rise in hospital admissions due to flu, with 40 patients being admitted daily, alongside additional COVID-19 and respiratory illness cases.

Lithuania is currently facing a concerning surge in hospitalizations due to influenza, with reports indicating that at least 40 flu-stricken patients are being admitted to hospitals each day. The National Public Health Center (NVSC) reported that 21 individuals are receiving treatment in intensive care units, underscoring the severity of the outbreak. Additionally, during the last week, 13 deaths were recorded as a result of flu, predominantly among patients with chronic conditions. Among these cases, 10 individuals were unvaccinated, while two had been vaccinated, and one person's vaccination status remains unknown.

The NVSC has also documented two COVID-19 related deaths, occurring among elderly patients aged 80-89 and over 90, both of whom had chronic health issues. The data shows that in the sixth week of the year (February 2-8), the overall incidence rate for influenza, acute upper respiratory infections (ARI), and COVID-19 reached 1280.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This figure represents a decrease from the previous week's rate of 1409.0 cases per 100,000. While the number of flu cases has shown a decline, the incidence of ARIs and COVID-19 has remained relatively stable compared to prior data from the same period last year, when the overall incidence rate was significantly higher at 1806.1 cases per 100,000.

With the recent trends and ongoing health risks, public health officials emphasize the need for flu vaccinations and caution regarding the continuous spread of both flu and respiratory infections. As the winter season progresses, monitoring the situation becomes crucial, especially in vulnerable groups that are more susceptible to severe outcomes from these illnesses. The combination of various viral infections at this time of year highlights the importance of preparedness and responsiveness from health services in Lithuania.
