Flu and COVID increasingly detected simultaneously in hospitals

A growing number of patients in Latvia are being found with both flu and COVID-19, leading to longer treatment times and greater health risks.

In Latvia, particularly at the Eastern Hospital's Infectology Centre in Riga, a concerning trend is emerging where patients are presenting with both the flu and COVID-19 concurrently. This situation has necessitated strict quarantine protocols, with visitor access to patients requiring permission due to the increased health risks. The severity of cases has escalated, with reported fatalities from flu, particularly among those with pre-existing chronic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

Doctors are reporting a significant number of patients in critical condition due to complications from respiratory issues, including pneumonia. The chief physician Baiba Rozentāle highlighted that currently, there are 26 severely ill flu patients in the centre, with two requiring intensive care, alongside another 11 COVID-19 patients. The overlapping presence of both viruses poses unique challenges for treatment and recovery, as these patients often suffer from compounded health issues related to their chronic illnesses.

The healthcare system faces an increased burden as treatment durations extend for patients suffering from both infections. The dual impact of these viruses complicates their medical management, particularly in patients with existing chronic illnesses, resulting in intensified damage, including blood clots in one case and systemic blood circulation issues in another. This situation demands urgent attention and resources within the healthcare system to address the rising number of patients and mitigate the ongoing risks associated with these simultaneous infections.
