Racer's car destroyed in fire while friend was driving: 'I was running'

Professional runner Samuel Lopes' car was destroyed in a fire while a friend was driving it, with Lopes running alongside.

On Saturday, Samuel Lopes, a professional runner, experienced a devastating incident when his car was consumed by flames on the PI-238 road in Sussuapara, in southern Piauí. According to Lopes, the fire broke out while a friend was driving and he was running alongside the vehicle. Despite attempts to extinguish the fire using a fire extinguisher and water, the efforts were unsuccessful and the car suffered a total loss, leaving Lopes in dismay over the incident. He suspects that an electrical failure may have caused the fire.

Lopes expressed his concern regarding the financial implications of the incident, revealing that he had only made eight payments on the car since purchasing it in June 2025, leaving 40 payments remaining. This adds a personal layer of distress to the event, as Lopes was clearly attached to the vehicle that held both monetary and emotional value. Witnesses passing by attempted to help with the situation and even reached out to the Fire Department of Piauí, but they faced hurdles due to poor mobile phone service at the time.

In response to the unfortunate event, friends and family of Lopes have come together to organize a fundraising campaign aimed at mitigating the financial impact of the loss. This communal support highlights the solidarity of the local community in times of distress, as they collectively work to help Lopes recover from this significant setback in both his personal and professional life, showcasing a blend of resilience and community spirit.
