The Racer Collides with Police While at the Car Redemption and Came Up with an Outrageous Scheme
A reckless driver, who was attempting to evade police, collided with a police car and later tried to claim insurance compensation for the damages.
A man in his forties from the Lahti region of Finland was sentenced to three months in prison for a reckless driving incident that occurred two years ago. The man had been driving under the influence and was trying to escape from police patrols. His driving spree ended with a collision with a police car, causing significant damage. Following the incident, he attempted to file a claim through his comprehensive insurance for €6,000 in damages, believing that someone else was liable for the accident. However, the insurance company detected irregularities in his claim and suspected foul play.
The Helsinki District Court previously sentenced the man for multiple offenses, including gross violations of traffic safety, driving without a license, severe drunk driving, and resisting a public official. His reckless driving included ignoring police stop signals and running traffic lights, which posed a danger to other road users. His actions took place on busy streets, including Mannerheimintie, Nauvontie, and Koroistentie, showcasing a blatant disregard for the law and public safety.
In total, the man was ordered to compensate nearly €9,000 to the insurance company for the damage caused to the police vehicle. This case highlights the ongoing issues of reckless and irresponsible driving behavior in Finland, alongside the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing such incidents. The attempt to claim insurance for damages caused by his own illegal actions also raises questions about the ethics of insurance claims in similar cases.
