TERNA: Final contractor for two railway projects in Romania – The total budget is 1 billion euros

Greek construction company TERNA has been awarded the contract for two railway projects in Romania, with a total budget of 1 billion euros.

Greek construction company TERNA, a subsidiary of GEK TERNA Group, has been officially appointed the final contractor for two significant railway projects in Romania by the National Railway Company of Romania (CFR). These projects have a combined budget of around 1 billion euros and are part of the broader Craiova-Drobeta Turnu Severin-Caransebeș railway network redevelopment. The projects are divided into two sections, with TERNA leading a consortium which includes Alstom Romania. Specifically, the two segments include Craiova–Filiași, budgeted at 543.4 million euros, and Filiași-Igiroasa, budgeted at 449.2 million euros.

The railway line between Craiova and Igiroasa stretches 83 kilometers, and TERNA's responsibilities encompass both the design and full rehabilitation of this section. Notably, TERNA holds a leading stake in the consortium, taking a 69% share for Lot 1 and a 74% share for Lot 2. The timeline for project studies is set at 12 months, while the actual construction phase is expected to span 36 months, which marks a significant opportunity for both the company and local infrastructure development in Romania.

This development signifies an important step in enhancing Romania's railway infrastructure, which has been a focus of modernisation over the past years. The involvement of a Greek company demonstrates the growing international partnerships in infrastructure projects across Europe, as countries seek to improve connectivity and transportation efficiency. The projects' successful completion may not only boost local economies but also improve regional trade and accessibility, aligning with broader European objectives for infrastructure integration and modernization.
