Terna – Ukrhydroenergo cooperation on track for 1.5 billion euro projects

Terna and Ukrhydroenergo are set to collaborate on major hydroelectric and pumped storage projects in Ukraine worth around 1.5 billion euros, having recently signed an Executive Confidentiality Agreement.

Terna, a Greek company, is furthering its collaboration with Ukrhydroenergo, the Ukrainian state-owned hydroelectric power company, as both parties work towards the joint development of significant hydroelectric and pumped storage projects in Ukraine. The partnership is entering a crucial maturation phase, marked by the signing of an Executive Confidentiality Agreement in Kiev, which facilitates access to vital technical, financial, and operational data on shared projects for both stakeholders. This agreement, signed by Terna’s Executive Director for International Development, Stathis Natsis, and Ukrhydroenergo’s CEO, Bohdan Sukhetskyi, is expected to enhance the evaluation and development of these projects.

The first phase of their cooperation will focus on the Dniester pumped storage station, boasting a capacity of 1,263 MW, alongside plans for a new 220 MW pumped storage facility, both located in Western Ukraine. These projects are part of broader efforts to enhance the country's energy infrastructure, particularly in renewable energy sources, as Ukraine continues to rebuild and modernize its energy capabilities. The collaboration not only signifies a significant financial investment, nearing 1.5 billion euros but also demonstrates an increasing interest in renewable energy investments in the region.

Overall, this partnership represents a crucial step towards bolstering Ukraine’s energy independence and sustainability, particularly in the wake of ongoing energy challenges. As both Terna and Ukrhydroenergo move forward with these substantial projects, it is likely to have far-reaching implications for the energy landscape in Ukraine, potentially serving as a model for future collaborations in other sectors as the country continues to engage with international partners for infrastructure development.
