PT rebuffs Nunes and says the city had resources to build the Capão Redondo reservoir

The PT group in São Paulo's City Council released a document disputing Mayor Ricardo Nunes' claims about the delays in the construction of the Capão Redondo reservoir.

The Workers' Party (PT) in São Paulo's Municipal Chamber has issued a statement challenging Mayor Ricardo Nunes' explanation regarding the delays in the construction of the Capão Redondo reservoir. Following the tragic drowning of a couple swept away by floodwaters in the city’s southern region, Nunes had attributed the project's delays to resource allocation issues. However, the PT argues that the municipal government had adequate funds available long before the actual commencement of work in 2023.

The document highlights that the contract for the construction of the reservoir was signed back in December 2015, during the administration of then-mayor Fernando Haddad. The project was not merely about the reservoir but included significant infrastructural developments such as extensions to a bus corridor and construction of bridges. The PT claims that the city had the resources and capability to begin construction much earlier, thereby potentially preventing disasters like the recent flooding.

Nunes’ administration contended that the original project, which outlined an expansive vision for the area, would have resulted in an immeasurable social impact and was therefore deemed unfeasible. This ongoing dispute underscores wider criticisms of the current administration’s handling of urban infrastructure and public safety, sparking debates about accountability and proactive governance in response to climate challenges.
