Aidu rowing channel will host its first international competition
Aidu rowing channel in Estonia will host its first international competition, the Baltic Cup, in 2026.
The Baltic Cup's organizing board has awarded the rights to host the 2026 rowing regatta to the Estonian Rowing Federation in collaboration with the Aidu Water Sports Center. This unprecedented opportunity comes on the heels of Aidu rowing channel recently obtaining its long-awaited tracks, a necessary condition for hosting international competitions. The awarding of the Baltic Cup to Estonia also aligns with the celebration of 150 years of Estonian rowing, highlighting the growth and potential of the local rowing scene.
Traditionally held during the last weekend of September, this year's regatta is scheduled for September 26-27. The Estonian Rowing Federation originally applied for hosting rights for the 2027 regatta; however, due to the lack of rowing tracks in Latvia—who initially sought to host in 2026—they were invited to consider hosting the event a year earlier. This swift pivot presents a unique opportunity for Estonia to showcase its newly developed rowing facilities and further its ambitions in the realm of international rowing events.
Hosting the Baltic Cup is an essential step in establishing the Aidu rowing channel as a serious contender for more prominent international competitions. It serves as a precursor to applying for the opportunity to host various international championship events, such as the U-19 and U-23 European Championships. The region's capacity to host such competitions will likely elevate Estonia's standing within the international rowing community and inspire younger athletes in the country.
