A New Step for Those Who Were Unable to Attend School: 'Another Graduation Ceremony' in Tokyo, Kita Ward
An alternative graduation ceremony was held in Kita Ward, Tokyo, for individuals who were unable to attend traditional ceremonies, allowing them to celebrate their achievements.
On March 7th, an alternative graduation ceremony titled 'Another Graduation' took place at the multipurpose facility 'Kitapia' in Kita Ward, Tokyo. This event was organized by the local board of education specifically for individuals, primarily in their 20s and 30s, who had missed their traditional graduation ceremonies due to various reasons, including truancy. Three women attended the ceremony to receive their graduation certificates, marking a significant step in their personal journeys towards recognition and acceptance of their past challenges.
During the ceremony, the graduates expressed their feelings and aspirations, hoping to create a connection between their past experiences and future endeavors. The Superintendent of Education, Haruichi Fukuda, presented diplomas to the graduates, while the Mayor of Kita Ward, Kanako Yamada, praised their courage and encouraged them to cherish what they believe in. This initiative was particularly important as many individuals who have experienced truancy face lingering regrets about missing their graduation ceremonies.
The local education board had started recruiting participants for this event last year, aiming to provide a supportive and celebratory platform for those who felt disconnected from traditional schooling milestones. Although the response was limited, with only six applicants, the organizing team embraced the importance of providing this opportunity. A workshop was held prior to the ceremony to prepare the attendees, emphasizing that taking part in such an event should be regarded as a commendable and brave step forward in overcoming past difficulties.
