Gratitude for 'Another Home': 15 Students of the First Night Middle School Graduated with Hope
A graduation ceremony was held for 15 students at Japan's first public night middle school in Mie Prefecture, marking a significant educational milestone for those who struggled with traditional schooling.
On the 14th, a graduation ceremony took place at the Mie Yotsuba Kasaki Middle School in Tsu City, marking the first public night middle school in Mie Prefecture. This institution caters to individuals who could not adequately participate in mandatory education, including students with experiences of non-attendance. Fifteen graduates, representing both the night school and the diversified learning school course, left the school with newfound confidence and hope for their futures.
One of the graduates, 15-year-old Shunsuke, who had been absent from school since the fourth grade until transferring to Yotsuba Kasaki Middle School, reflected on his journey, expressing gratitude for the supportive and nurturing environment that made the school feel like 'another home'. He emphasized how attending this school allowed him to gain self-confidence and urged current students to cherish their school life and create lasting memories with their teachers and friends.
During the ceremony, the students were also treated to the debut of their school anthem 'People of Hope,' which was collaboratively written and composed by a three-man musical group known as '20th Century.' Principal Ayumi Maeda spoke about the song, highlighting how the title encapsulated the spirit of the students. She encouraged the graduates to remember the memories and the essence of their school life during challenging times, wishing that the flowers of hope would continue to bloom within them as they move forward in life.
