Kiriyama, the Spring Tournament Champion, Holds a Press Conference; Aiming to Become a 'Cool' Ozeki for the Second Time
Kiriyama, after winning his third championship at the Spring Tournament, expressed his desire to become a 'cool' ozeki during a press conference.
Kiriyama, currently ranking as a sekiwake, held a press conference on the 23rd in Sakai City, one day after winning the Spring Tournament, marking his third victory. This success, his first in 14 tournaments, was a result of his skillful wrestling, allowing him to perform confidently and secure a total of 12 wins, including an impressive winning streak of 11 matches. Despite facing defeats against ozeki opponents on the 14th day and the final day of the tournament, Kiriyama's ability to remain composed and not rush his victories contributed significantly to his performance.
The press conference highlighted Kiriyama's goals for the future, specifically his ambition to return to ozeki status by the summer tournament in 2024. Having previously experienced injuries, particularly around his neck, Kiriyama has increased his training regimen, which has led to significant improvements in his performance, achieving 34 wins over the last three tournaments. He emphasized that he aims to embody a strong and stylish image as an ozeki, stating his desire to be both cool and powerful in the ring.
A ceremony to announce his promotion is anticipated to take place on the 25th of this month. Kiriyamaβs successful return to form not only enhances his personal career but also captivates the sumo wrestling community, as his journey reflects resilience and dedication in a highly competitive environment, showcasing the spirit of the sport in Japan.
