Kirshima Continues Good Performance Towards Ozeki Comeback - Wins First Championship in 14 Tournaments at Spring Sumo Tournament

Kirshima has secured a championship victory, ensuring his return to the rank of Ozeki after a 14-tournament hiatus following the Spring Sumo Tournament held at Edion Arena Osaka.

The Spring Sumo Tournament, held at Edion Arena Osaka, concluded on the 22nd with Sekiwake Kirshima confirming his championship victory, guaranteeing his return to the rank of Ozeki after a 14-tournament absence. The Japan Sumo Association is set to hold a special board meeting on the 25th to discuss his promotion back to Ozeki. Kirshima, originally from Mongolia and formerly known as Kirimayama, made his debut in the sumo world in 2015 with the Mutsu stable. He reached the ranks of new entrants in January 2020 and was promoted to Ozeki after achieving his first championship victory during the Kyushu Tournament in the same year. Despite a strong performance with 11 wins during the initial tournament of 2024, he was unable to maintain his Ozeki status, primarily due to injuries that affected his performance. While he fell to the rank of Sekiwake after a poor showing at the 2024 Summer Tournament, there exists a special rule that permits a Sumo wrestler to return to Ozeki status if he scores more than ten wins after his demotion. Kirshima's successful rebound is notably rare, with only two other wrestlers—Kakizoe and Terunofuji, who later became a Yokozuna—previously achieving a comeback to Ozeki after similar setbacks.
