Deputy Minister: As Lithuania allocates record funds to defence, the U.S. holds up the country as an example for others
Lithuania is recognized by U.S. representatives for allocating a record 5.38% of its GDP to defense, the highest among NATO countries, according to Deputy Minister Aleksa.
In a recent statement, Lithuanian Deputy Minister of Defence, Aleksas, expressed the country's pride in being recognized by U.S. officials as a model for other nations regarding defense spending. This year, Lithuania is dedicated to allocating 5.38% of its GDP to defense, marking a significant investment, the highest percentage among NATO members. The commitment reflects Lithuania's evolving defense strategy and highlights its proactive stance in addressing regional security concerns.
During his participation in the Miami Security Forum hosted by the Heritage Foundation, Deputy Minister Aleksa outlined Lithuania’s journey in defense funding, detailing how it transitioned from having one of the smallest budgets among NATO allies to establishing one of the largest. This shift not only underscores Lithuania's serious approach to defense but also aligns with NATO's goals of increasing military readiness and collective defense capabilities among member states.
Aleksa stressed the importance of long-term planning and investments in enhancing the capabilities of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, which are essential for sustaining national security. Furthermore, he asserted the need for transparency in defense spending processes to foster public trust and support. With such commitments, Lithuania aims to contribute significantly to NATO's collective defense and serve as a benchmark for other nations in terms of defense investment and policy.
