Lithuania's Deputy Minister of Defense has expressed pride that the United States is presenting Lithuania as a model for other nations in terms of defense spending. The Deputy Minister noted that Lithuania plans to allocate 5.38% of its GDP to defense this year, which is the highest percentage allocated for defense among NATO member states. This significant investment reflects Lithuania's commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities at a time of heightened regional security concerns.
During a security forum in Miami hosted by the Heritage Foundation, Deputy Minister K. Aleksa highlighted the key factors that facilitated the increase in Lithuania's defense budget. He emphasized the importance of transparency in defense spending and the need for public support and trust in the decisions made regarding the use of defense resources. Such transparency is crucial for justifying the financial investment to the public, fostering a collective sense of security, and ensuring that military capabilities are effectively developed and maintained.
In addition to his presentation, the Deputy Minister also visited Washington, D.C., where he held meetings with officials from the Pentagon, Congress, and the Defense Security Cooperation Agency. These discussions are part of a wider effort to enhance defense cooperation between Lithuania and the US, reinforcing Lithuania’s role as a reliable ally in NATO and contributing to broader security initiatives in Eastern Europe.
