I am Lee Jae-myung, and I'm threatening to blow up Kakao... A teenager arrested and prosecuted for 17 instances of 'swatting' threats

A teenager has been arrested and prosecuted for making multiple bomb threats against companies by impersonating President Lee Jae-myung.

A 17-year-old has been arrested and prosecuted by the Suwon District Prosecutor's Office for making bomb threats directed at several major companies, including Kakao and the KT Corporation, while impersonating President Lee Jae-myung. The teen is accused of making a total of 17 threats between December 2025 and February 2026, using a tactic known as 'swatting.' This involves falsely claiming to have explosives and targeting high-traffic locations such as corporate offices and public transport hubs.

The prosecution revealed that the teenager was able to carry out these actions by using a combination of voice chat platforms like Discord and virtual private networks (VPNs) to remain anonymous. They allegedly connected with other youths to obtain personal information, such as phone numbers and account details, which they then used for impersonation purposes. A second minor, also involved in these actions by providing information and encouragement, has been indicted without detention on charges related to aiding and abetting the threats.

Prosecutors have expressed concern that this kind of criminal behavior is becoming a troubling trend among teenagers, treating 'swatting' as part of a game or culture. They emphasized their commitment to prosecuting such serious crimes that waste public resources and create insecurity among citizens, ensuring that appropriate legal measures are undertaken against the offenders.
