VSAT: Illegal migrants not turned back at the Belarusian border

Lithuanian border authorities report not turning back illegal migrants from Belarus, amidst similar actions by neighboring Latvia and Poland.

The State Border Guard Service of Lithuania (VSAT) has reported that it has not turned back illegal migrants at the border with Belarus. This comes as Latvia's border service denied entry to one migrant, while Polish officials did not report any incidents of illegal migrants. The situation reflects ongoing tensions and the management of migration in the region, particularly in light of the migrant crisis that began due to tensions instigated by the Belarusian regime in 2021.

In the previous year, Lithuania successfully prevented over 1,600 individuals from illegally crossing into its territory from Belarus. This year, the number has significantly decreased, with only 76 incidents recorded thus far. Notably, since the onset of the migration crisis instigated by Belarus, a total of 24,600 illegal migrants have been denied entry into Lithuania. This highlights the ongoing challenges that Baltic nations face in managing migration flows and the implications of the political situation in Belarus on regional security and stability.

The influx of migrants into eastern European countries has been exacerbated since 2021, with Western nations pointing fingers at the Minsk regime for orchestrating these migration flows as a form of hybrid warfare. The situation requires coordinated responses from bordering nations to ensure border security while addressing humanitarian concerns, reflecting the broader geopolitical tensions in the region.
