VSAT: 18 illegal migrants turned back at the border with Belarus

Lithuanian border officials turned back 18 illegal migrants attempting to cross from Belarus, while Latvia reported no illegal migrant activity.

Lithuanian border guards have turned back 18 illegal migrants attempting to cross into Lithuania from Belarus. This border enforcement action comes amid ongoing concerns regarding illegal immigration in the region, particularly as migrants have attempted to enter various Eastern European countries since the onset of the migration crisis in 2021. In contrast to Lithuania's actions, the Latvian border service reported no illegal migrant activity on the same day, and Polish border guards also did not turn back anyone attempting to cross on the previous day.

Since the beginning of the migration crisis exacerbated by the Belarusian government, Lithuania has prevented over 24,600 illegal migrants from entering, with officials indicating a significant drop in attempts this year compared to last year. Specifically, last year, authorities managed to stop more than 1,600 individuals at illegal crossing points. The situation reflects ongoing tensions and the broader geopolitical landscape, where Western nations have attributed the surge in migration to the actions of the Minsk regime.

As the flow of migrants continues to be a point of contention between Belarus and its neighboring countries, efforts to manage the situation are crucial for regional stability. With the EU closely monitoring the situation, this latest turn of events highlights the complexities of border security in response to hybrid threats and showcases the ongoing commitment of Lithuanian authorities to maintain control over its borders amidst a challenging and rapidly evolving crisis.
