Women arrested in Paraná with 17 guns bought in Paraguay
Two women, one Brazilian and one Paraguayan, were arrested with a cache of weapons during a police operation on the border between São Paulo and Paraná.
Two women, one from Brazil and one from Paraguay, were apprehended on Sunday afternoon at the border between São Paulo and Paraná, possessing 16 revolvers, a pistol, an empty magazine, and 25 rounds of ammunition, all believed to have been smuggled from Paraguay. According to the Federal Highway Police, the firearms were intended for delivery in Betim, located in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais.
The arrest occurred at kilometer 1 of BR 369 in Jacarezinho, PR, near Ourinhos, SP. A team from the São Paulo branch of the Federal Highway Police halted a Fiat Cronos carrying two men and two women. The weapons were discovered wrapped in plastic film and packed within the women's backpacks, intermixed with clothing. Investigators found no evidence suggesting the men were involved in the illegal transport of the arms.
Initially, the women denied ownership of the firearms. However, they later confessed to purchasing the weapons in Paraguay. The authorities charged them with international arms trafficking, and they were taken to the Federal Police headquarters in Londrina, where they will face potential legal repercussions for their actions, highlighting ongoing issues of cross-border weapon smuggling in Brazil.
