Ecuadorians in the United States and Spain access ID cards in minutes with new Civil Registry system
Over 19,600 Ecuadorians living in the United States and Spain have obtained their ID cards in under 30 minutes thanks to new printing points in New York and Madrid.
A new Civil Registry system has significantly expedited the process for Ecuadorians abroad to obtain their identification cards, with more than 19,600 residents in the U.S. and Spain successfully acquiring their IDs in less than 30 minutes. This new infrastructure began operating in New York in December 2024 and expanded to Madrid in July 2025, providing much-needed accessibility for the Ecuadorian diaspora. Prior to this initiative, many faced a cumbersome process that included extensive wait times of over 45 days and the need to travel back to Ecuador.
The initiative has already proven its effectiveness with 16,038 IDs issued in the United States and 3,587 in Spain, considerably alleviating the challenges faced by Ecuadorians abroad. Many expressed relief at the reduced costs and expedited services, emphasizing the convenience of completing the process on the same day rather than enduring long delays. This accessibility is particularly crucial for the large Ecuadorian community residing in Madrid, as it aligns with their needs for swift governmental services while living outside their home country.
The establishment of these points in major urban centers is a strategic response to the enduring demands of expatriates. Both New York and Madrid were chosen due to their substantial Ecuadorian populations, creating an optimal environment for the deployment of this service. The success of this project could serve as a model for future initiatives aimed at improving governmental access for citizens residing abroad, potentially inspiring similar efforts in other countries with significant expatriate communities.
