IG orders reduction of police tactical teams
The Nigerian Inspector-General of Police has ordered a reduction in the number of police tactical teams across the country to improve supervision and address public complaints.
The Inspector-General of Police in Nigeria, Olatunji Disu, has issued a directive mandating the reduction of tactical police teams at various command levels nationwide. This initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance oversight over the tactical units and respond to public concerns regarding their conduct. The new limitations specify a maximum of five tactical teams at Zonal and State Command levels and a maximum of three teams at Area Commands and Divisions.
The announcement was made by Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, who highlighted ongoing issues surrounding the proliferation of tactical units and purported excesses due to inadequate supervision. The policy change allows for the merging or disbandment of existing teams, providing commanders with the discretion to reorganize their resources effectively. This restructuring aims to alleviate staffing shortages in regular police stations, which have been exacerbated by the expansion of tactical teams.
This decision reflects an acknowledgment of the operational challenges within the Nigerian police force and a commitment to fostering better relations with the community. By redistributing personnel from tactical teams back to essential policing duties, the Inspector-General's directive aims to improve overall service delivery and address citizen feedback regarding police efficacy and responsibility.
