Damaged Russian tanker will be towed to Libya

The tanker 'Arctic Metagaz,' which was carrying a cargo of fuels and liquefied natural gas, will be towed to Libya after being damaged by explosions amid accusations between Russia and Ukraine.

The Russian tanker 'Arctic Metagaz' was transporting approximately 700 tons of fuel and liquefied natural gas from Russia to Egypt when it experienced a series of explosions on March 3. Russia has accused Ukraine of attempting to blow up the vessel. Following the incident, 30 crew members were rescued, but the damaged ship drifted for almost three weeks between Malta and Libya, raising concerns about environmental hazards. The Libyan National Oil Corporation (NOC) announced it would collaborate with the Italian company Eni to tow the damaged tanker safely to one of Libya's ports.

In a statement released by NOC, it was noted that managing the environmental threat posed by the tanker remains entirely possible. The corporation stated it has already begun taking measures to mitigate pollution risks associated with the ship's condition. Recent footage captured by AFP showed the vessel leaning to one side, with charred and severely damaged sections due to fire, and two holes on either side of the hull visible.

The situation with the 'Arctic Metagaz' underscores the ongoing maritime tensions in the region, particularly amid the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The potential environmental disaster posed by the damaged tanker amid geopolitical strife highlights the critical need for international cooperation to address such incidents before they lead to broader ecological crises.
